Post No Kids Bangkok Trip

The kids were asked to take care of each other during the time that we were away. Of course they had to take care of Mochi. They took such good care of Mochi, such that they each fed him 1 dinner on Thursday evening. Zaky even whatsapp to say that Mochi didn’t seem to like his new wet food and barely ate any. Zzzzz. He was just too full lor.

Zaky’s Friday class was cut short in view of polling; Nana didn’t even have school on Friday. They were supposed to take care of each other but Zaky went to one of the youth’s place to sleepover on Friday night and another youth’s place to sleepover on Saturday night. I would have stopped him in usual times; he maximised his opportunities. Nana was alone with Mochi. I think Mochi kept her brave. Haha.

Nana cleared Mochi’s litter box and didn’t miss the chance to declare how responsible she is. She even cooked her lunch on Saturday and proudly told us that she “also can”. It is usually Zaky who does the cooking.

The pasta looked decent and Nana said that it tasted decent too except for the excessive onions. I had the honor to do the tasting of the leftovers on Sunday and we had to add a lot more cheese to season the leftovers. Haha.

The kids had survived very well in our short absence. It is a signal that we can now go for longer trips. Hohoho. What I obviously lack is annual leave to satisfy my holiday cravings.

The short Bangkok trip was great. Though only for 3 days, it was activities packed. Whatever pockets of time was filled in with shopping. It was a very efficient trip, though very tiring too. I am definitely looking forward to more holidays!

Bangkok, No Kids! Day 3

The gym only opens at 7am, so I decided that I would do my kickboxing HIIT in the hotel room instead.

The plan for the day was the Chatuchak weekend market. We were unable to request for late checkout and probably wouldn’t make it back before 12pm and thus had to check out after bfast.

The bfast spread was similar and we were careful to keep our tummies for the other yummy Thai food.

Daddy Lim had joined the elephant pants tourist gang.

We didn’t bring any luggage bag and I was too cheapo to spend a lot of money to buy some brand less luggage in BKK. The plan was therefore to stuff the backpack to the brim and checkin the backpack. I did a good job doing the stuffing.

We left the bag in the storage and took a grab to Chatuchak. It had rained in the night, coupled with Saturday morning, we had to wait a while for the grab car.

Chatuchak is huge and where we start really depends on where the drive drops us. We were dropped near the furniture arm. That was exactly what we wanted to see. The wood furniture are so nice. I had wanted to buy a statement piece for our future bedroom and there are so many of them in BKK. They looked used and aged and while they are really beautiful, I have second thoughts on buying such a piece and its history. Pass.

We left the furniture section empty handed. The furniture are not cheap too.

We walked blindly and came to the pet section. Not these 2, these 2 cuties are strays but so cute!

I really wanted to snack on something and bought sausages. Hmmm, the ones on the cycling tour were nicer.

There were alot of roaming. We never try to make sense of which section sells what. We simply walked and changed an alley if we realised that we had walked that previously.

It was about noon that we thought of calling it a day. While we didn’t buy much, it was a good trip of window shopping. We had lunch at the Chatuchak mall. We are not sure if it is a new mall but it was air conditioned and 3 floors. There were a lot of clothes shopping on the 1st floor while toy/ figurine shops occupied most of the other floors. We saw a pet cafe. Got mini pigs!

I wanted to have the last bit of Thai food and we found a Thai noodles place. A small bowl of noodles is only THB20, that is like SGD0.80! I ordered a small bowl and wanted to get a big one for Daddy Lim but the staff gave me weird look and so I changed the order to a small bowl too for Daddy Lim. Big bowl is a lot meh?

It turned out that the small bowl was really tiny. Daddy Lim probably can finish his in 1 mouthful.

Luckily we also ordered sides. They turned out much bigger in portion than the noodles. Hoho.

This was some coconut custard dessert. We didn’t try.

With a happy tummy, we headed back to Pratunam. We had booked a taxi at 4.30pm to the airport and had time to spare. Massage sounded like the perfect time burner.

I opted for a feet and back massage. Towards the end, the massage lady was twisting my back this and that way and I heard the loudest crack from my back ever. It was so good.

Finally, a coffee and cheese cake before the trip to the airport.

These were what we brought home. Very well planned.

The car ride took about an hour. The traffic was further worsened by the downpour. I don’t know if the rain cooled Bangkok but it still felt very hot. We were advised to arrive at the airport 3 hours before the flight time and thus had a lot of time to spare. The immigration wasn’t too bad.

We had time for dinner. Guessed what Daddy Lim had? BK again??!! I don’t know what is so nice about BKK’s BK that made him eat it 3x during the trip. He had BK everyday. Haha.

We tabaoed mango sticky rice home too, especially for Nana.

The flight wasn’t full. We booked the exit row with extra leg space. See, so spacious!

I was hoping that nobody would take the window seat but no such luck. Our section was the only one that was fully occupied. The guy in the exit row in front of us had the whole row to himself and was lying down to sleep the entire flight. #envy

The flight was uneventful and we touched down slightly ahead of schedule. Home sweet home. Though short, it was a very effective way to use 3 days. We had a very fruitful trip.

Bangkok, No Kids! Day 2, Part 2

Part 2 of the tour was the Amphawa Floating Market and followed by the firefly tour. We had actually booked that the last round to Bangkok with Auntie S and kids but were too sick to make it (for the car ride).

The floating market is 20 mins’ drive from the railway market. Again, the guide pointed us to the direction of the market and we had about 1.5 hour to roam the market. Some stalls lined the way to the actual market

The 1st food that we bought - I thought it was some kind of otah but actually fish cake.

Along the way, we kept seeing this crocked head fish cushion.
They come in all sizes, some as long as 1m. It was even funnier to realise that the actual fish also comes with a crooked head. Daddy Lim said too much hp. Hoho.

This floating market is a lot smaller than the Damnoen Saduak floating market. This one also doesn’t have vendors selling their wares/ food on boat. The only thing that it has are the boat cruise and shops that lined the canal.

The water level seems low; Daddy Lim said that it was probably low tide but I never see the water rise or lower in the whole time that we were there.

While the water looks greyish brown, at least it doesn’t smell.

We roamed and walked and stopped for coconut ice cream bcos it was very warm. That was despite it being a cloudy day.

The market didn’t feel very big and many of the shops were either closed or not leased. We decided to stop for an early dinner in a stall that provided this interesting seating on the steps leading to the canal.

We ordered this huge siew mais. Very nice.
Also grilled squid and buttered scallops. The squid and scallops were bbq on this boat in front of us.

While waiting, we saw this big monitor lizard swimming.

The buttered scallops were meh. We saw the cook selecting the scallop shells before placing the tiny scallop on the shell. Do you think they reuse the shells??!!
The squid tasted much better, with a nice bbq taste.

We spent some time leisurely people watching, until it was almost time to gather. The shops were selling about the same things and we didn’t have anything in particular to buy.

Back at the meeting point, we had to wait for the firefly tour to commence. I thought the sky was still quite bright. Can see the fireflies? It was quite a long wait before we were finally asked to board the boat.

We sailed past many sights.

The light started to fade and we also saw some really glamorous houses.

This is the cue for Daddy Lim to suggest that we should retire in BKK. Lol. I don’t want to retire in BKK, it is way too hot and humid.

The boat went further and finally slowed beside some thick bushes. It was a dark patch of vegetation, away from street/ house lights. We had no idea what we were looking for/ at. After some really slow cruising, the boat sped off. This happened for another couple of times before the boat U-turn. No firefly??!’ I felt so cheated.

We did the same for a few more times on the way back. I was losing hope. Maybe it just isn’t the season. Firefly is seasonal? Then, the boat suddenly came to a very slow cruise and we spotted our 1st firefly! It was a very tiny dot of glow in the trees. Then a few more appeared and they kept appearing!

They looked like very tiny Christmas lights. I was telling Daddy Lim that maybe those really are Christmas lights that were hung to fool silly tourists. Lol. Then, we saw this tiny little guy flying above the water. At some point, it dropped too near to the water and we were all cheering for it to fly harder and higher. Hahaha.

That marked our firefly adventure. It was such an eye opener. We continued the long boat ride back to the pier.

The long boat ride was switched out to a long van ride home. There had been too much walking and my feet were hurting. Coupled with tiredness and the inability to fall asleep, it was frustrating.

The ride took 2 painful hours. Traffics wasn’t smooth, even in the night. Bangkok is definitely not the place to retire. Haha. We were so glad to be let out of the car and stretch our legs. Daddy Lim had earlier said that Hardrock Cafe is 15 mins walk away and he wanted to go after the tour. However, he decided otherwise when we finally ended the tour; he just wanted to go back to the hotel to rest.

What we did do was to tabao BK for supper. I got my mango sticky rice fit. Hoho.

Our loot for the day.

Again, it was a super tiring day. Sleep, we must.
